Ummm, Hi!

So, I have been shocking as usual on my updates.

Pretty much been close on a year since my last update, and for that I apologise.

Then again, I don’t think this gets read too often apart from the occasional spam bot.

Soooooo, what’s new.

Well for those that don’t know, Donna and I moved into a place of our own on the Estate.

A lovely 3 bedroomed house that we now call our very own home, and are no longer sharing a small loft room.

I have since changed jobs and now work at MultiChoice (ps all views contained within this blog are my own and in no way reflect the opinions and views of MultiChoice). Hahaha, sorry that had to be said.

I am enjoying it here, it is technology based, which keeps my mind going most times.

Other than that, things all seem to be going good, and both Donna and I are incredibly happy.

Oh, I did forget, we have a new addition to the family, Perry.

Perry is our cinnamon African Pygmy hedgehog, the cutest and most adorable thing ever.

Who would have thought that something so spikey could, at the same time be so cuddly and lovable, and just love snuggling up close.

Kthnxbai!

Valentines Day (Super Late Edition)

Very bummed with myself that I didn’t post my annual Valentine’s Day rant, and I know this is late by just shy of 3 months or so.

I detest it, purely because it is just a money making scheme used by big corporates, playing on love. You can say “I Love You” any time, on this day it is FORCED.

Saying that, I did succumb and take Donna out to dinner, purely because my new fav restaurant (even though I don’t go there as often as I would like, not having money and all) sent out the most AMAZING menu:

<insert awesome menu here when I find it>

Anyway, needless to say, it was AWESOME, ate stuff I never thought I would, namely oysters and asparagus.
I wanted to take more pics, but I was having too much fun!

Thanks once again to Shaun and all those at Fusion

I really suck at updates

Wow, ummm, ya so that last post was some time ago. I really need to do this more.

I am actually doing this from my phone in an attempt to blog more.

So, roll on update time, sit back and grab your popcorn.

First, and foremost. Donna and I have decided to take the next big step, we are moving in together. Yup. At the end of Feb, I will go from saying “my house” to “our house”.

We are just going to be in her loft room at hers for a while, for a few months, just to get stuff settled, and all our ducks in a row, before we head out and get our very own place :)

Next, as I said before, I am taking full control of my company, gdit. I have already had a good run of clients, and I just printed my new set of business cards w00t w00t

Ummmmm, I think that has been the super major important stuff. There will be more later :)

Tag Cloud

I have now removed my Tag Cloud cause it wasn’t playing nice.

I have been trying to tweak my jquery tag cloud, as I have noticed that it displays out of the box sometimes in Chrome, but now I have noticed in FF and IE it doesn’t even work.

Poll time!

Is my Tag Cloud working?

Bumper Update Edition

Wow, so looking when I last posted, I am really sucking at this blog thing. I def think I need to put the app back on my phone.

So, November was pretty bleh, nothing exciting happened, well clearly, no blog post.

Decemeber was INSANE. I was off to Zim for 10 days, for my dad’s 60th.
Now, bear in mind, I hadn’t been to Zim for going on 5 odd years maybe? So it was going to be an interesting experience.

So, first off, the net in Zim is much to be desired. ADSL is few and far between, the “3G” they have is slow, shit and expensive, 1 USD for 5mb of data.

Vodacom has no agreement with Zim for prepaid lines, so I had no roaming. I did have a prepaid Zim cell number that my step dad uses when he goes there, BUT they don’t activate data my default, I had to ask someone there.

Pricing in Zim is all in USD, the only have dollar denominations, but insist pricing with cents, so if you need change, you have to take a credit note (valid at that shop only), or sweets, or change in rand (at 10 to 1). Same as if you owe cents in, you can pay in rand (at 10 to 1).
Some stuff is cheap as hell, others super expensive, even found some SA stuff cheaper there than here, don’t ask me how!

Plans were in Zim were also to go on a houseboat on Lake Kariba (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Kariba), which is generally always sunny and hot and amazing.
Well, were meant to be there Monday to Friday, which was cut short. It rained, rained all day, every day. Nothing but rain. I have a few pics to follow.

<insert pics here>

Coming back, I hit the ground running, the main tech had gone on leave, so I filled in as tech, as well as squeezing in the helpdesk stuff as well.

My journeys took me to Toti, Richmond, PMB, Umtentwini, Durban CBD, all over the place. It was also the time I was doing major installs for our products on my own, running cable over 50m through ceilings, and wow, some of the stores were only but missions!

I really enjoyed it though, was good to get on the road, and do tech stuff that I am used to.

Christmas was a chilled family affair, lunch at my folks, dessert at Donna’s and finishing up with a nightcap at Jo’s Pool Bar, where else.
We pretty much ate more than enough over that weekend, and had the following week to no do an awful lot!

New Year’s Eve was basic and chilled, 5 of us, in the rain for braaing and drinking, and spent Sat sleeping til 12, the only thing to do on the most laziest day of the year!

To keep this short and sweet, I will post plans for 2011 next!

gdit, and moving on and forward

As most of you may or may not know, I am the proud owner of my own company, Gregory and Darryl IT and Design.

We have been going for 2 years now, but recently, due to quietness of business, my partner and myself both took day jobs in the IT industry to bring in extra cash.
He is working full time for another web dev company and I am working as a temp in a company that does In Store Radio, and Telephone on Hold systems.

Now, my tenure ends here in about Feb next, so I am going back full swing into my company, and making some  changes:

  • I will be coming the sole member and owner of the company
  • My website will be up and functioning fully
  • I will still offer website development and design, and graphic design
  • I will still offer PC support and sales, both onsite and remotely
  • I will now also offer network cabling
  • I will also endeavour to supply and install PA systems

I am able to offer IT support anywhere in the Durban area, and networking cabling and PA anywhere in KZN.

There will be an affiliate system in that discount/free stuff will be gained for referrals.

I really aim to make this work, and appreciate everyone’s support, and any comments, hints, tips can be emails, tweeted, or smsed.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank Greg for all his hard work and support over the past 2 years and wish him the best of luck.

Wow, feeling bad here.

Hmmm… So I haven’t blogged in a while, feel a bit bad about that, cause I have had stuff to blog about, just never actually got round to doing it, and I forgot. Maybe I should put WordPress back on my phone so that I can blog when I need to, just the Blackberry I have has a small amount of memory, and some apps love chewing it.

Oh, and Happy Halloween! And Go SHARKS!! Bring the Currie Cup home! I will be watching the game somewhere!

The Popo…

So, there I was, minding my own business driving through town, after an installation, and the popo pulls up next to me at a robot, and asks that I pull over, so I turn right, hit a side road and double park.

They asked us to step out the car, and proceeded to check myself, my mate and my car for drugs, struggling, as it is, since there was nothing in the car. They asked a million and one questions, then left, with the officer saying “The inside of your car is really messy” Well, thank you Captain Obvious, I know its messy, cause I have lots of stuff, esp since I am coming from and installation.
The funniest part out of all of this was him trying to open a child proof Panado tub, I had to show him out to.

Yes, I know I was within my rights to deny them a search and request badge numbers, etc, etc, but in all honesty, that just makes them aggro and next minute they “find” something in my car, or decide to be assholes.

Do our police in Durban really have nothing better to do than pull people over at robots and search them, no warrant, no pretext? My only guess is that they were hoping to find something and promptly extort some drinking money.

P.S. If you do carry drugs around with you, use Panado tubs, it has been proven that they cannot open them :P

Weekend away

I know I have been quiet, I admit, I have been lazy, I have wanted to blog, just didn’t get round to it, I did have the WordPress app on my Blackberry, but I deleted it cause it took up space I needed.

So, anyways. I have been in need of a serious break. All I ever seem to do is work, day job, night job, own company job, so my life is just too busy, so the second I got the chance to have a weekend away, I jumped at it soooo fast. So, I took a half day on Friday, and Donna, Amy, Steve and myself took a much needed weekend away to St Lucia.

All I can say is WOW! I had such an awesome time, my phone got left on the side table when I went out, and I hardly touched it, phone calls and smses went unanswered, no Facebook or Twitter, ignored emails, EVERYTHING.

Midnight drives looking for hippos, pub crawling on foot, no driving through town. Anywhere we could walk we did. Had a awesome game drive on the Saturday, where we saw kudu, duiker, zebra, vervet and samango monkeys, rhino, warthog, wildebeest (photo gallery soon.)
Spent a day on the Cape Vidal beach, took a forest mission to the whale tower, saw nothing sadly.
We went to the Crocodile Farm after Sunday lunch for a lil mission before we left, such a tourist thing, but it was still awesome.

All in all, it was an awesome and epic weekend that I won’t forget, and I will def be going back there soon.

Big thanks to Bruce (Steve’s dad) and Glynis at iGwalagwala for putting us up, treating us like family, to Steve for being our most awesome tour guide, to Amy for coming with us and having a jol, to my lovely lady for making it a great getaway, and to Dawn (Donna’s mom) for letting us use her Tucson.

…nom nom nom…

Despite the ups and downs Donna and I have had, we reached the 3 year mark the other day. In celebration we went to have a nice romantic dinner at Fusion World Food Cafe.

Well, it was possibly the most AMAZING dinner I have ever had in my life! We ate very unconventional things, but it was awesome none the less.

Dinner

**Pre-drinks there**

I had a bottle of Moet et Chandon (please note it is pronounced mwet and not mo-ay, moo-ee, moot, or anything else) from a while back, so we sipped on that when we got there.

**Starters**

Darryl: Smoked Crocodile carpaccio with brushetta, rocket and parmesan

**Mains**

Darryl: Nyala steak with white chocolate jus, gooseberries, pecan nutes, pototo gratin and roast butternut (on special)

Donna: Pepper crusted seared ostrich steak with chocolate and red wine jus on home-made gnocchi

**Desserts**

Darryl: Ice cream flash frozen at the table in liquid nitrogen

Donna: Freshly made bread and butter pudding

**Coffee/Drinks**

Darryl: Double espresso

Donna: Chocolate cake shooter

I will most definitely be going there again, was decently priced, the service from Caryn was awesome, the main chef Shaun was very friendly, and waived our corkage.

It was a night to remember, and something most fitting of a 3 year anniversary.

Do yourself a favour, go eat there.
